Litvakus is a critically acclaimed New York based klezmer collective, founded and led by the clarinetist, vocalist, and composer Zisl Slepovitch. It is the first group to focus almost exclusively on the music culture of the Litvak Jews and their neighbors in Slavic and Baltic countries. Litvakus features a uniquely distinct, regional sound, a recognizably Jewish idiom, and high-energy, “shtetl disco” music, along with traditional Eastern European Jewish vocals. Litvakus and Zisl Slepovitch have a long history of artistic collaboration with the Berlin-based Yiddish singer Sasha Lurje who will appear in the January 28 concert at Rose Bowl Tavern in Urbana as a guest vocalist and a poyk (drum) player.
