SUMMARY:Litvakus
DESCRIPTION:Litvakus is a critically acclaimed New York based klezmer collective\, founded and led by the clarinetist\, vocalist\, and composer Zisl Slepovitch. It is the first group to focus almost exclusively on the music culture of the Litvak Jews and their neighbors in Slavic and Baltic countries. Litvakus features a uniquely distinct\, regional sound\, a recognizably Jewish idiom\, and high-energy\, “shtetl disco” music\, along with traditional Eastern European Jewish vocals. Litvakus and Zisl Slepovitch have a long history of artistic collaboration with the Berlin-based Yiddish singer Sasha Lurje who will appear in the January 28 concert at Rose Bowl Tavern in Urbana as a guest vocalist and a poyk (drum) player.

SUMMARY:Turino Family Band
DESCRIPTION:Matt (fiddle\, guitar\, feet\, and vocals) and Tom (banjo\, accordions\, fiddle\, and vocals) have been playing string band\, Cajun\, and original tunes together for thirty years–since Matt was seven. Around Urbana-Champaign they have been part of the Squeezetones\, The Cornstalkers\, and the touring contra dance band\, Euphor\, as well as playing as a duo. After moving to Kentucky\, Tom teamed up with his wife Shannon (guitar\, vocals\, triangle) to form the core of various bands playing old time and Cajun music. Meanwhile Matt and his partner Claire Johnson (fiddle) began performing in the sterling string trio\, Meadowhawk. They also take great pleasure playing together whenever the family gets together.
