300 S. Broadway
Urbana
IL 61801
Where: Lincoln Square Mall, Southeast Entrance (near Common Ground). If you are standing outside the Common Ground main entrance, go left and follow the building around the corner. Next entrance is the spot! There is a covered entryway leading into a foyer which then opens into the mall. Serves PASS and Edward Jones.
When: Mondays, 7-8:30 PM or so, rain or shine
Why: Gather to play, sing, and learn about acoustic music
Who: Anyone who sings and|or plays any acoustic instrument
What: Traditional roots music styles, esp. country, folk, blues. “Slow” means this jam is geared toward beginners and intermediate players. We play simpler songs at slower tempos.
How: Together! We’ll try to play at moderate volume, so that we can hear ourselves and each other. As needed, we’ll start songs by reviewing chords, melody, and rhythm.
We’ll take turns picking songs. Try to be ready with a handful you would like to suggest. If you pick the song, you have the option to get it started and the group will join in. This is harder than it sounds; it’s something you may want to practice ahead of time! Try counting in and playing simple rhythm (downstrums on each beat) to get the song started; others can then join in and add flavor.
Folks are encouraged to share new songs. If you want to suggest a song, bring several copies of the chord chart, or be ready to “teach” us the song and call out the chord changes.
What to Bring: Instrument(s), chair, music stand, chord charts, clips or binder, pencil and eraser, good vibes
