Like music? Like stringed instruments? Urbana Park District has a free summer offering that’s right for you.

Urbana Park District is hosting the free, weekly Ukulele Jam, Wednesday’s at Phillips Recreation Center, from 7-8 p.m.

Gather (outside weather permitting), and enjoy an hour or playing music. It’s called the Ukulele Jam, but bring any folk instrument.

The jam plays music mostly from the 1950s – 1970s.

It’s a free jam, and there’s no need to RSVP or pre-register for a week. Just come as you are!

Prairie Crossroads Blues Fest @ Champaign County Fairgrounds

The Prairie Crossroads Blues Society announces their third annual Blues Fest will take place Saturday, August 14 from 1:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the Champaign County Fairgrounds, Urbana, IL. Gates open at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance through August 12 at bluesfest.prairiecrossroadsblues.org or $20 at the gate.

Kilborn Alley Blues Band, a homegrown legend of the Champaign, IL area, will headline the show. Other bands include Johnny Rawls, Ivy Ford, Smiley Tillmon featuring Kate Moss and William Marsala. Gerry Hundt’s Legendary One Man Band and Jesse Cotton Stone will dominate the solo/duo stage. Music will alternate between two stages for nearly continuous blues music.

Celebrating One Community Together

Join us for live performances by these wonderful local music ensembles — Bow-dacious String Band, BBL Fine Arts Jazz Ensemble, Vine Street Syncopators, Noah I Brown and Company, Jordan Kaye and His Tune Wranglers, Kavi Naidu Jazz Quartet, Hot Iron String Band, and special recorded performances by the community’s Urbana, Central, and Centennial High School Marching Bands and the University of Illinois’ Marching Illini at the Rose Bowl Tavern and streamed on facebook live.

Special hands-on and virtual children’s activities will be provided by Urbana Park District, the Champaign County Museums Network, Parkland College’s  Planetarium, University of Illinois’ Spurlock Museum and Krannert Art Museum, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, Museum of the Grand Prairie, and the University Library’s Sousa Archives and Center for American Music.  This year’s music and educational programming is supported by the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music, Spurlock Museum, Urbana Folk and Roots Festival, Rose Bowl Tavern, Urbana Public TV, and the Champaign County Museums Network. Prairie Crossroads Blues Society holds 2 Jams each month the 2nd Sunday of each month from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, and 7:00 to 10:00 pm on the 4th Wednesday. Jams are held at Pipa’s Pub, 604 S. Country Fair Dr., Champaign.

The host band typically plays the first set, then we open it up to all the jammers in the house. Bring your instrument and plan on sitting in!
