I’m thrilled to share the news that klezmer violin virtuoso Jake Shulman-Ment is doing a summer tour of solo concerts around the country and will be performing locally at the Rose Bowl Tavern on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at 4:00pm. The concert will be outside under the big tent in the parking lot adjacent to the Rose Bowl (across the street from the Courier Cafe) at 106 N. Race Street in Urbana. There is no charge for this event, but we hope that attendees will generously support the tip bucket for Jake and will order drinks from the Rose Bowl’s wide variety of offerings (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic). Feel free to bring in your own snacks or take-out.
is among the most highly regarded klezmer musicians performing today. He tours and records internationally as a soloist and with other klezmer luminaries, including Daniel Kahn, Pete Rushefsky, and Frank London. Jake first began playing violin at the age of 3, studying classical technique with renowned violin pedagogues, and beginning his study of klezmer music at age 12 as a protégé of Alicia Svigals. Steeping himself in related violin traditions, Jake was a Fulbright Scholar based in the Eastern Romanian province of Moldavia in 2010-2011. He has been a faculty member at KlezKamp, KlezKanada, Klezmer Paris, the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, Yiddish Summer Weimar, and other festivals throughout the globe. His debut solo CD, A Redele (A Wheel)
(Oriente Music, 2012) was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award.
We are extraordinarily lucky to be included in Jake’s tour. Hope to see you there!
