The New Orleans Jazz machine is a Traditional/Dixieland jazz band that began over 20 years go. At the 2015 festival the band will feature the following musicians: Carl Johnson, clarinet/soprano sax; Brighten Godfrey, trumpet; Barry Wagner, trombone; Ernie Hoffman, piano; Josh Houchin, bass; Gary Peyton, drums. Occasionally other outstanding instrumentalists and vocalists are featured.
The NOJM plays many Dixieland and swing favorites. The band has played in the Champaign-Urbana area at locations such as the Blind Pig, High Dive, Cowboy Monkey, the Embassy, University of Illinois events, church services, wedding receptions, picnics, parties, and at many other private and community events.
Acclaimed as a “stunning vocalist, master teacher, and folk festival in a box,” Barbara Silverman has performed for three decades solo and with The Laketown Buskers, The Teflons, The Schticklers and Silver Rose. Appearances include Prairie Home Companion, Pritzker Pavilion, Chicago Symphony Center, openers for Emmy Lou Harris, Odetta, and Arlo Guthrie, and seven CD recordings. Barb is on the music and dance faculty of Old Town School of Folk Music, and was chosen for their first international trip to England and Finland.
Colby Maddox toured with Special Consensus Bluegrass Band, won first prize at the 2006 Rocky Grass mandolin competition in Lyons, Colorado, and teaches fiddle and mandolin at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Recent side projects include playing on the soundtrack for the PBS documentary The Hayloft Gang: The Story of the National Barn Dance, narrated by Garrison Keillor, and singing on the soundtrack for the Newberry Library’s Homemakers of the Civil War: Sheet Music.
Barb and Colby will perform twice at the festival. Their Prairie Breezes appearance is in collaboration with the Urbana Free Library, a concert series that is especially for the whole family!
