Mardi Gras Party with Dennis Stroughmatt & Friends @ RBTV Online
Feb 12 @ 8:00 pm

Greetings friends and music lovers,

Just in time for Mardi Gras, I’ll be playing music with Dennis Stroughmatt on Friday, Feb. 12. We’ll be streaming from the Rose Bowl in Urbana and the show will start at 8:00 PM CST.

Along with Greg Bigler (on bass), we’ll be taking a Mardi Gras Road Trip that will include French songs from Old Upper Louisiana (Missouri-Illinois-Indiana), and Cajun & Creole music from southwest Louisiana. We’ll also make a brief stop in New Orleans somewhere along the way.

The gig will be streamed on Facebook —
Mardi Gras Party with Dennis Stroughmatt & Friends

The Rose Bowl streams shows on RBTV (Rose Bowl TV). Besides Facebook, you can access RBTV on YouTube.

Hopefully, we can provide some musical warmth in the middle of the Arctic Blast.

Thanks and I hope that some of you can catch this livestream.

Klezmer violinist Jake Shulman-Ment @ Rose Bowl Tavern parking lot patio
Jun 20 @ 4:00 pm

Hi all,

I’m thrilled to share the news that klezmer violin virtuoso Jake Shulman-Ment is doing a summer tour of solo concerts around the country and will be performing locally at the Rose Bowl Tavern on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at 4:00pm. The concert will be outside under the big tent in the parking lot adjacent to the Rose Bowl (across the street from the Courier Cafe) at 106 N. Race Street in Urbana. There is no charge for this event, but we hope that attendees will generously support the tip bucket for Jake and will order drinks from the Rose Bowl’s wide variety of offerings (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic). Feel free to bring in your own snacks or take-out.
Jake Shulman-Ment is among the most highly regarded klezmer musicians performing today. He tours and records internationally as a soloist and with other klezmer luminaries, including Daniel Kahn, Pete Rushefsky, and Frank London. Jake first began playing violin at the age of 3, studying classical technique with renowned violin pedagogues, and beginning his study of klezmer music at age 12 as a protégé of Alicia Svigals. Steeping himself in related violin traditions, Jake was a Fulbright Scholar based in the Eastern Romanian province of Moldavia in 2010-2011. He has been a faculty member at KlezKamp, KlezKanada, Klezmer Paris, the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, Yiddish Summer Weimar, and other festivals throughout the globe. His debut solo CD, A Redele (A Wheel) (Oriente Music, 2012) was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award.
Check out the information and videos at Jake’s website: https://www.jakeshulmanment.com/
Here’s a direct link to one of his solo klezmer fiddle performances: https://youtu.be/Su2zBPsoyEY.
We are extraordinarily lucky to be included in Jake’s tour. Hope to see you there!

English Country Dance! @ Channing-Murray Foundation
May 22 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

We are planning to hold an English Country Dance on Sunday, May 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Channing-Murray Foundation in Urbana. We will be asking everyone to show proof of vaccination at the door and to wear masks while inside the dance space. We certainly hope we can start holding dances with less restrictions in the near future, but for the moment we feel we need to make these requirements to keep everyone safe.

Hopefully, the weather will be nice and we can have some refreshments at the break outside the building. We’ll have to keep an eye on the weather to see about that. We will also be keeping an eye on the current COVID numbers in case they get bad again and we have to reschedule.

This will be our first regular dance in over 2 years, so we are all a bit rusty. We are planning on doing a number of basic dances. I hope that everyone will be able to join us.

Jonathan

English Country Dance @ Channing-Murray Foundation
Jun 12 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

English Country Dance is the dance form that was popular in England and America in the 1600’s, 1700’s and early 1800’s. It is one of the dance forms from which modern contra and square dance are descended. If you’ve seen any of the recent Jane Austen movies then you’ve seen this sort of dance. We also do some early American dances from the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras.
