Music at the Museum: Rare Privilege @ Museum of the Grand Prairie
Mar 18 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Join us in welcoming Rare Privilege! This group features Maria Terres on fiddle and Amy McFarland on piano. Their music has often been described as “way more sound than we ever thought two instruments could make.” Devotion to their individual instruments, a sense of innovation, and a deep love and respect for the living tradition of folk music and dance combine to give their music an imaginative and lyrical energy and drive. Rare Privilege plays for New England Style Contra Dancing, Irish and Scottish Social Dancing, English Country Dancing, and many other traditional dance styles. Based in Wisconsin, they have performed throughout the US and also in Canada. With spring on the horizon, join us for an afternoon of music and energy at the museum! FREE! What is blues dancing? It is a family of African American social vernacular dances that have evolving in various regions throughout the United States since the early 1900’s. It is danced largely to blues music, but also to early jazz and swing. The evolution of blues music as well as historical and geographic factors impacted the development of various styles of blues dance, such as jukin’, ballroomin’ and struttin’.  The revival of blues dance followed the Lindy Hop revival in the 1980’s and 1990’ss. Over the last 20 years it has become so popular that there are blues dance communities in many major cities and instructors and enthusiasts travel nationally and internationally to attend blues dance festivals. But you can join us right here in Urbana every Monday night!
