English Country Dance @ Phillips Recreation Center
Feb 18 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

English Country Dance is the dance form that was popular in England and America in the 1600’s, 1700’s and early 1800’s. It is one of the dance forms from which modern contra and square dance are descended. If you’ve seen any of the recent Jane Austen movies then you’ve seen this sort of dance. We also do some early American dances from the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras. Follow this link for more information.

Kevin Burke @ House Concert TBA
Feb 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Kevin Burke’s fiddle playing has been at the forefront of traditional music for over 30 years. In the US he received a National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA, in Ireland the prestigious Gradam Ceoil award, both acknowledging him as a master of the tradition. Although Kevin has spent much of his life playing in a group context, he has never lost his love for solo fiddle music – the “naked fiddle” as he sometimes puts it. His solo concerts are mesmerizing, you feel like a fortunate guest in the home of this gracious master of the Irish tradition.

What is blues dancing? It is a family of African American social vernacular dances that have evolving in various regions throughout the United States since the early 1900’s. It is danced largely to blues music, but also to early jazz and swing. The evolution of blues music as well as historical and geographic factors impacted the development of various styles of blues dance, such as jukin’, ballroomin’ and struttin’.  The revival of blues dance followed the Lindy Hop revival in the 1980’s and 1990’ss. Over the last 20 years it has become so popular that there are blues dance communities in many major cities and instructors and enthusiasts travel nationally and internationally to attend blues dance festivals. But you can join us right here in Urbana every Monday night!
