Psoy Korolenko and Daniel Kahn: The Unternationale: Dialectical Polyglot Klezmer Cabaret @ Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Stage 5
Sep 19 @ 7:00 pm

“The Unternationale: Dialectical Polyglot Klezmer Cabaret” promises to be an amazing event! Psoy Korolenko is a polyglot performer who incorporates Russian, Yiddish, English, French, and other languages into his phenomenal performances. He also has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and tours and talks all over the world, often with Daniel Kahn. Kahn, a Detroit native who has relocated to Berlin, performs widely with the Painted Bird as well as with Korolenko. Kahn says: “I come from Detroit, a worker’s city. I love songwriters like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. And especially Yiddish labor songs. You can take a song written a hundred years ago and sing it about unemployment in the US today.  It still works. But while I love political songs, I’ve also translated and sung Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones in Yiddish. You could say I make a kind of Yiddish punk cabaret.”

Sponsored by the University of Illinois Program in Jewish Culture and Society and the Krouse Family Visiting Scholars in Judaism and Western Culture.

The Champaign/Urbana Singer-Songwriter Collective @ Clark Bar
Oct 3 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Started in the Spring of 2011 by Jeff Arrigo and Christopher Todd Durnil, the Champaign-Urbana Singer-Songwriter Collective originally met at the UC-IMC on Wednesday nights. We have now moved the location to the Clark Bar and meet on the first Tuesday of the month, with special showcases the following Tuesdays. This is a great group and all of us have become fast friends – it’s open to all styles, all ages, we’re non-judgmental – we’re all just there for the love of music and sharing songs and ideas for songs with one another, and talking about the music scene. If you haven’t come out to the group yet, please be sure to mark the first Tuesday of the month on your calendar. It’s a great time, and I’m always looking for musicians who would love to play on Tuesdays!

Be sure to check the Facebook page for announcements of the second Tuesday special showcases!
