The C-U Folk and Roots Festival is collaborating with the Canopy Club to bring Greensky Bluegrass, a group made up of Anders Beck, Michael Arlen Bont, Dave Bruzza, Mike Devol, and Paul Hoffman. For over a decade these guys have developed their own unique version of bluegrass, combining elements from string band traditions and rock and roll. Their music is full of psychedelic swirls and bursts of acoustics. If you have missed them in the past at Canopy Club, now is your chance to see them! Come check them out with special guest Cris Jacobs on March 15, 2017!

Charlie King Singer Songwriter, Political Satirist @ UC Independent Media Center
Mar 25 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Charlie King Singer Songwriter, Political Satirist @ UC Independent Media Center | Urbana | Illinois | United States

PRESENTED BY THE UCIMC

Charlie King is a musical storyteller and political satirist. He has been at the heart of American folk music for half a century. He sings and writes passionately about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.

His songs have been sung by Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie, Peggy Seeger, Chad Mitchell and Judy Small, to name a few.

“With encouraging regularity, Charlie King emerges from his self-reflection to remind us of the happy resilience of the human spirit. His message songs vary between the funny and the frightening, but he pulls them off with unvarying taste, musical skill, and charm.”
Billboard

“One of the finest singers and songwriters of our time.”
Pete Seeger

Charlie’s central vision as an entertainer is to leave audiences with a sense of optimism and possibility about the future. “I try to cover a broad emotional landscape in my concerts. The stories I collect and the songs I write take the listener on a journey of humor, heartache and hope. What I most value in a song is the way it helps us see an old reality in a totally new light.”

Klezmer Workshop with Dan Blacksberg
Mar 30 @ 7:30 pm

Learn from the best! Philly-based klezmer trombonist Dan Blacksberg will lead this workshop on klezmer style for musicians. Dan will help us work on groove and style, and sheet music will be available. Instrumentalists should be proficient on their instruments; professionals will be able to add a new style to their toolkit. Yiddish singers, the emphasis will be on instrumental klezmer, but all musically-inclined and musically-interested will find value in attending.

A bit more about Dan:

A 2012 Pew Fellow in the Arts and graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Dan Blacksberg is one of the few musicians in the world who performs and teaches traditional klezmer on the trombone. Recognized as a master of the traditional trombone style, he can often be found performing with the field’s top artists. He is a founding member of Alan Bern’s The Other Europeans, and has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Frank London, Adrienne Cooper, Michael Winograd, Daniel Kahn, Hankus Netsky, Alicia Svigals, Elaine Hoffman-Watts, and more. Dan has taught and performed in festivals all over the world, such as Klezkamp, Klezkanada, Yiddish New York, Lowell Folk Festival, the Krakow Fesitval of Jewish Culture, and Yiddish Summer Weimar in Germany, and has been an artist-in-residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Note: No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Anyone who can contribute more, it would be much appreciated!
